About
Dr Helen Bratton
I am a chartered and registered Clinical Psychologist. I have experience working with a wide range of longstanding and complex mental illnesses and disorders. Throughout my career I have specialised in the area of forensic clinical psychology, working in high, medium and low secure hospitals, specialist consultation services as well as community forensic mental health teams and prisons. I work with a range of client groups including older adults, adults, young people, children and staff groups.

Working in the independent sector, I provide private therapy for a wide range of psychological difficulties including anxiety, low mood, stress, managing challenging circumstances, trauma and relationship difficulties. I also provide supervision to practitioners working as qualified clinical psychologists and students undertaking masters level courses.

When working therapeutically with clients my aim is to provide a safe and trusting space for people to talk through areas of difficulty in their life, to offer guidance based on psychological principles to help make sense of what can sometimes feel over-whelming. I am compassionate and caring as well as clear and direct, I challenge when appropriate and listen when needed. I work collaboratively with clients to develop an understanding of their difficulties and move towards achieving their goals for therapy.

I provide medico-legal reports for the purpose of psychological assessment and formulation in relation to risk of violence and mental health. In addition to specialising in forensic clinical psychology during my training and subsequent employment, I have undertaken specialist training in a wide range of tools used to assess personality and risk for both adult and youth populations.

I completed my undergraduate M.A. in Psychology at the University of Glasgow and my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. Since qualification I have undertaken specialist additional training in advanced therapy skills in Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Schema Therapy.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I am trained to work across the life span with mental illness, mental disorder and psychological wellbeing. Clinical Psychologist is a protected title by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), this ensures that the term is only used by those who have meet the academic and professional competencies as stated by the HCPC.
